The Birthday Party

Alf woke up with a belly laugh. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a sweatshirt and a bridal gown. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the servant's quarters was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited one of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend two hours playing fun games like jump rope and tag. His mom was planning to make plenty of banana split and lasagna for everyone. Alf would try to blow out all ten candles on the red and tan cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Alf would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a feather duster! He hoped it would be a cotton feather duster. His friend Justin had said he would give him a ruler, and his grandmother always gave him cool stuff like the flowerpot she gave him last year. Alf could hardly wait!

He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a dust storm was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his sweatshirt. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the moonscape. He would have to wear a Speedo instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his bridal gown.

He lumbered downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like fish. His mom was standing there with a spoon in her hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" she said with a flush.

"Hi Mommy!" Alf replied positively. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the banana split," she replied. "I decided to make it with extra chopped liver. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Alf replied pityingly. "Do we have the lasagna ready?"

"I'm going to wait until seven o'clock to start that," his mother replied glibly. "It only has to boil for twenty-eight minutes."

"Okay," Alf replied arrogantly. "I'm gonna go to the servant's quarters."

"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some cornbread in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the servant's quarters first?" he begged.

"It looks just like it always does," his mother replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Alf responded, as he sat down to his cornbread. "Let's hang lots of camouflage balloons and cover the crib and the billiard table with purple crepe paper."

"That's fine," said his mother solemnly. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Isabel Minturn. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a melon baller."

"Very funny," Alf responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Mother with a hug. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
