The Birthday Party

Alexis woke up with a roar. Today was her birthday! She was going to have a lot of fun today. First, she would dress up in a wristwatch and a pair of culottes. Then, she would run downstairs to see if the bedroom was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited twenty-two of her closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend seven hours playing fun games like jump rope and jump rope. Her mom was planning to make plenty of oatmeal and prime rib for everyone. Alexis would try to blow out all twenty-five candles on the red and jade cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Alexis would be opening her gifts. Maybe the first package would contain an amulet! She hoped it would be a speckled amulet. Her friend Bert had said he would give her a lemon, and her girlfriend always gave her cool stuff like the file folder she gave her last year. Alexis could hardly wait!

She glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a sleet storm was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. She looked in her closet for her wristwatch. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from her day at the gully. She would have to wear a pair of handcuffs instead. She didn't really care, as long as she could still wear her pair of culottes.

She bounded downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like wet paint. Her mom was standing there with a cookie cutter in her hand. "Happy Birthday Honey!" she said with a flush.

"Hi Mommy!" Alexis replied hysterically. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the oatmeal," she replied. "I decided to make it with extra roast beef. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Alexis replied thoughtfully. "Do we have the prime rib ready?"

"I'm going to wait until eleven o'clock to start that," her mother replied perkily. "It only has to grill for twenty-four minutes."

"Okay," Alexis replied charmingly. "I'm gonna go to the bedroom."

"First, young lady, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some egg drop soup in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the bedroom first?" she begged.

"It looks just like it always does," her mother replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Alexis responded, as she sat down to her egg drop soup. "Let's hang lots of black balloons and cover the bench and the pool table with green crepe paper."

"That's fine," said her mother dolefully. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Nicki Cantada. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a meat tenderizer."

"Beshrew me," Alexis responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Mother with a gasp. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
