The Birthday Party

Biff woke up with a honk. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a jacket and a pair of nylons. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the outhouse was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited five of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend eight hours playing fun games like tennis and rummy. His mom was planning to make plenty of hot dogs and egg rolls for everyone. Biff would try to blow out all thirty-three candles on the aqua and maroon cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Biff would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a balloon! He hoped it would be a used balloon. His friend Andrew had said he would give him a pair of suspenders, and his girlfriend always gave him cool stuff like the pair of knitting needles she gave him last year. Biff could hardly wait!

He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a rainbow was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his jacket. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the trail. He would have to wear a bib instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his pair of nylons.

He dove downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like black pepper. His mom was standing there with a whisk in her hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" she said with a caress.

"Hi Mommy!" Biff replied needlessly. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the hot dogs," she replied. "I decided to make it with extra white wine. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Biff replied slyly. "Do we have the egg rolls ready?"

"I'm going to wait until two o'clock to start that," his mother replied defiantly. "It only has to marinate for fifty-four minutes."

"Okay," Biff replied cruelly. "I'm gonna go to the outhouse."

"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some hors d'oeuvre in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the outhouse first?" he begged.

"It looks just like it always does," his mother replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Biff responded, as he sat down to his hors d'oeuvre. "Let's hang lots of brown balloons and cover the four-poster bed and the couch with carrot-orange crepe paper."

"That's fine," said his mother flightily. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Candy Bertrand. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has an egg cutter."

"Great Caesar's ghost," Biff responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Mother with a face palm. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
