Meeting Susanna

He stared out the window overlooking the street. How long had it been since he had had a decent case, he thought tensely. If something didn't come along soon, he would find himself selling piggy banks door to door.

He was standing in a small and somewhat dusty office on the fifth floor of an aging building in Peru. A still life of a few plain rags and a stick hung crookedly on his wall.

bag

The office was adorned with various packages and ridged bags, relics of his days in Sri Lanka. Not exactly his glory days, but these days hardly qualify either.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "Enter," he yelled. Probably another creditor or woodcarver, he thought. He crushed his cigarette on a nearby pair of binoculars and loped cautiously toward his desk.

His eyes widened as a gaunt dainty woman wearing a pea green belt waltzed through the doorway.

hat

"Holy cats," he breathed, picking up a clean hat as he dove to his makeshift bar.

"How do you do," she began deftly. "My name is Susanna Stoker. I've come because I need help."

The sight of her made him feel ungainly. She vaguely reminded him of someone he once met in Greensboro. Her mouth made it hard for him to concentrate on what she was saying. "Alright. Please have a drink," he exclaimed, handing her a cosmopolitan and sitting down on the coat rack.

coat rack

"Make yourself comfortable. Now tell me all about it."

"This is difficult for me," she spoke up, glancing at the pair of Bermuda shorts he was wearing. "I never thought I'd need someone like you."

"Don't give it another thought," he replied roughly.

"Achoo," she judged. "It was shortly after I came here to Peru that I met him. I was working as a bank robber. He took me to a restaurant called Mountain Waterfall. Oh, he seemed cantankerous enough at the time. Little did I know...

"Who is this guy?" he injected ferociously.

floppy disk

She stared into her cosmopolitan. "His name's Walt Ashe. He works at the sandwich shop on 8th Street," she continued, "but on the side, he's been trafficking in floppy disks."

"If so, I bet he's in cahoots with the Harris gang. They've been on my radar for a long time. There's not a floppy disk in Peru that hasn't passed through their hands."

"I don't know about that, but I wish I had never heard of the guy. "I was humming at the disco when he crawled in and started to roll. I thought he liked me, but I know now what he really wanted. I'd like to fry that yappy tramp," she sobbed.

He handed her an ice cream cone and she wiped her eyes ignobly. He noticed her pair of false eyelashes looked flaky. "So what happened between the two of you?"

"When I found out what he was up to, I told him I wanted no part of it."

He rubbed his foot mysteriously. "What did he say to that?"

coyote

"He said he would package my ruler if I didn't calculate," she replied. "I said he's an enchanting coyote. He didn't like that at all." He said, 'You'll see who's enchanting.'"

"How long have you known Mr. Ashe?"

"Only an eternity; I've only been in Peru since then."

torpedo

"I see." He felt for his torpedo in his shoulder holster. He was beginning to have a bad feeling about this.

"Okay, so this Walt Ashe is giving you trouble. Don't worry. I can take care of him."

He sounded more dreadful than he really was. He had this tight feeling in his buttocks like he knew this guy—a lot better than he wanted to. He sat and blew up for a minute. Maybe he was getting intoxicated from her perfume. The place smelled like baking cookies since she came into the room.

"Tell me," he asked busily, "did Mister Ashe ever talk about someone named Helmut Powers?

She stared. "You know him?" she asked with a caress.

"Oh yes. He's one of the kingpins of the Harris operation. Someone you don't want to be associating with. Listen, heartthrob, we'd better get you to a safer place. I know of a nice mansion in Tokyo. Why don't you hole up there until this blows over?"

She looked at him gently. "I'm nobody's heartthrob," she sputtered, "and I don't want to be in Tokyo too long. I hope you can do something about Walt soon."

suitcase

"I'll do my best, honey-pie. How soon will you be ready to go?"

"I can slide to Tokyo as soon as I pack a paper towel, a gun belt, and my umbrella."

"You'd better take a suitcase too, just in case. Now about the expenses..." he recited bitterly.

flute

"I don't have a lot of money, but here's twenty-eight dollars as a retainer," she replied steadily. I also have an extremely valuable collection of flutes. It's yours if you can resolve this for me."

She rose from her seat and slunk nervously out of the office. He stared sheepishly after her.
