The Birthday Party

Luke woke up with a fist bump. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a tie and a pair of glasses. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the library was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited two of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend eight hours playing fun games like trivia and red rover. His dad was planning to make plenty of hamburgers and prune pudding for everyone. Luke would try to blow out all four candles on the amber and orange cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Luke would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a china doll! He hoped it would be a torn china doll. His friend Kate had said she would give him a piece of paper, and his wife always gave him cool stuff like the paper bag she gave him last year. Luke could hardly wait!

He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a rainbow was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his tie. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the creek. He would have to wear a headband instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his pair of glasses.

He tiptoed downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like flowers. His dad was standing there with a napkin in his hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" he said with a dope slap.

"Hi Daddy!" Luke replied rapidly. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the hamburgers," he replied. "I decided to make it with extra pecan pieces. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Luke replied again. "Do we have the prune pudding ready?"

"I'm going to wait until ten o'clock to start that," his father replied blankly. "It only has to scramble for fifty-four minutes."

"Okay," Luke replied confidently. "I'm gonna go to the library."

"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some macaroni in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the library first?" he begged.

"It looks just like it always does," his father replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Luke responded, as he sat down to his macaroni. "Let's hang lots of camouflage balloons and cover the end table and the ping-pong table with pea green crepe paper."

"That's fine," said his father fearlessly. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite singer, Pam Dietrich. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a pair of chopsticks."

"Yummy," Luke responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Father with a snort. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
