The Birthday Party

Flash woke up with a finger gun. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a watch and a corsage. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the closet was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited fifteen of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend three hours playing fun games like red light green light and Candy Land. His mom was planning to make plenty of scrambled eggs and potatoes and gravy for everyone. Flash would try to blow out all fifteen candles on the maroon and silver cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Flash would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a bag! He hoped it would be a fresh bag. His friend Darryl had said he would give him an ingot of plutonium, and his aunt always gave him cool stuff like the teapot she gave him last year. Flash could hardly wait!

He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a period of warm weather was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his watch. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the plain. He would have to wear a pair of sandals instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his corsage.

He stormed downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like rain. His mom was standing there with a cookie cutter in her hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" she said with a finger gun.

"Hi Mommy!" Flash replied briskly. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the scrambled eggs," she replied. "I decided to make it with extra kale. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Flash replied sheepishly. "Do we have the potatoes and gravy ready?"

"I'm going to wait until six o'clock to start that," his mother replied proudly. "It only has to spoon into container for forty-five minutes."

"Okay," Flash replied patiently. "I'm gonna go to the closet."

"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some Froot Loops in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the closet first?" he begged.

"It looks just like it always does," his mother replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Flash responded, as he sat down to his Froot Loops. "Let's hang lots of sea green balloons and cover the sofa and the washing machine with green crepe paper."

"That's fine," said his mother victoriously. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Josephine Wolf. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a Sham-Wow!."

"For the love of Pete," Flash responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Mother with a raspberry. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
