The Birthday Party

Adrian woke up with a furrowed brow. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a ski mask and a negligee. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the master bedroom was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited two of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend eight hours playing fun games like Clue and baseball. His dad was planning to make plenty of ravioli and doughnuts for everyone. Adrian would try to blow out all twenty-two candles on the turquoise and mauve cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Adrian would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a cactus plant! He hoped it would be a petite cactus plant. His friend Jennessa had said she would give him a ping-pong paddle, and his grandpa always gave him cool stuff like the thumb drive she gave him last year. Adrian could hardly wait!

He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that an earthquake was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his ski mask. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the dumpster. He would have to wear a pair of knickerbockers instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his negligee.

He tramped downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like ginger. His dad was standing there with a sharp knife in his hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" he said with a belch.

"Hi Daddy!" Adrian replied coolly. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making the ravioli," he replied. "I decided to make it with extra sugar. Hope that's okay with you."

"I guess so," Adrian replied sheepishly. "Do we have the doughnuts ready?"

"I'm going to wait until seven o'clock to start that," his father replied humbly. "It only has to toast for twenty-five minutes."

"Okay," Adrian replied clumsily. "I'm gonna go to the master bedroom."

"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some lobster in the skillet for you."

"Can't I just take a peek at the master bedroom first?" he begged.

"It looks just like it always does," his father replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."

"Oh yeah," Adrian responded, as he sat down to his lobster. "Let's hang lots of salmon balloons and cover the couch and the fainting couch with golden crepe paper."

"That's fine," said his father boisterously. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Patricia Pough. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a whisk."

"You don't say," Adrian responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"

"I think you inhaled your food," said Father with a blush. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
