Edward woke up with a smack. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a pair of pantaloons and a sweatshirt. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the bedroom was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited twenty-eight of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend eight hours playing fun games like leapfrog and ring around the rosie. His mom was planning to make plenty of bread and butter and crumb cake for everyone. Edward would try to blow out all nine candles on the carrot-orange and maroon cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Edward would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a hammer! He hoped it would be a fuzzy hammer. His friend Jeffrey had said he would give him a smart phone, and his mom always gave him cool stuff like the necklace she gave him last year. Edward could hardly wait!
He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a snowstorm was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his pair of pantaloons. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the cesspool. He would have to wear a bodysuit instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his sweatshirt.
He paraded downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like Max Factor. His mom was standing there with a grater in her hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" she said with a sneeze.
"Hi Mommy!" Edward replied quickly. "What are you doing?"
"I'm making the bread and butter," she replied. "I decided to make it with extra clam juice. Hope that's okay with you."
"I guess so," Edward replied gracefully. "Do we have the crumb cake ready?"
"I'm going to wait until four o'clock to start that," his mother replied calmly. "It only has to broil for five minutes."
"Okay," Edward replied steadily. "I'm gonna go to the bedroom."
"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some burritos in the skillet for you."
"Can't I just take a peek at the bedroom first?" he begged.
"It looks just like it always does," his mother replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."
"Oh yeah," Edward responded, as he sat down to his burritos. "Let's hang lots of violet balloons and cover the water bed and the chair with hot pink crepe paper."
"That's fine," said his mother impatiently. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Alyssa Quintero. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a blender."
"Oh my," Edward responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"
"I think you inhaled your food," said Mother with a glare. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
