Kyle woke up with a flush. Today was his birthday! He was going to have a lot of fun today. First, he would dress up in a pair of UGGs and a diamond bracelet. Then, he would run downstairs to see if the living room was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited twelve of his closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend eight hours playing fun games like treasure hunt and badminton. His dad was planning to make plenty of oyster on the half-shell and hors d'oeuvre for everyone. Kyle would try to blow out all twelve candles on the jade and metallic red cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Kyle would be opening his gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a bag of groceries! He hoped it would be a big bag of groceries. His friend Crystal had said she would give him a magnet, and his grandfather always gave him cool stuff like the orange she gave him last year. Kyle could hardly wait!
He glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a hurricane was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. He looked in his closet for his pair of UGGs. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from his day at the plain. He would have to wear a pair of khakis instead. He didn't really care, as long as he could still wear his diamond bracelet.
He tore downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like cheese. His dad was standing there with an electric mixer in his hand. "Happy Birthday Son!" he said with a backward glance.
"Hi Daddy!" Kyle replied jokingly. "What are you doing?"
"I'm making the oyster on the half-shell," he replied. "I decided to make it with extra sweet pickles. Hope that's okay with you."
"I guess so," Kyle replied reluctantly. "Do we have the hors d'oeuvre ready?"
"I'm going to wait until ten o'clock to start that," his father replied wryly. "It only has to place on serving dish for eighteen minutes."
"Okay," Kyle replied courageously. "I'm gonna go to the living room."
"First, young man, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some sauerkraut in the skillet for you."
"Can't I just take a peek at the living room first?" he begged.
"It looks just like it always does," his father replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."
"Oh yeah," Kyle responded, as he sat down to his sauerkraut. "Let's hang lots of teal balloons and cover the overstuffed chair and the cushion with brown crepe paper."
"That's fine," said his father gleefully. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Lucia Dole. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a knife."
"Far out," Kyle responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"
"I think you inhaled your food," said Father with a pucker. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
