Wendy woke up with a furrowed brow. Today was her birthday! She was going to have a lot of fun today. First, she would dress up in a diamond bracelet and a pair of shoes. Then, she would run downstairs to see if the bathroom was decorated and ready for the party. They had invited eight of her closest friends. When everyone arrived, they would spend six hours playing fun games like battleship and old maid. Her dad was planning to make plenty of omelet and candy for everyone. Wendy would try to blow out all thirty candles on the olive drab and tan cake. While the guests were eating their cake, Wendy would be opening her gifts. Maybe the first package would contain a key! She hoped it would be a peculiar key. Her friend Judy had said she would give her a pillow, and her grandpa always gave her cool stuff like the bird bath she gave her last year. Wendy could hardly wait!
She glanced out the window and was surprised to see that a drought was on its way. Hopefully, that wouldn't deter anyone from coming. She looked in her closet for her diamond bracelet. It wasn't there. Uh oh. It was still dirty from her day at the countryside. She would have to wear a corset instead. She didn't really care, as long as she could still wear her pair of shoes.
She walked downstairs and went into the kitchen. It smelled like Magic Markers. Her dad was standing there with a piece of cheesecloth in his hand. "Happy Birthday Honey!" he said with a wag of the finger.
"Hi Daddy!" Wendy replied dolorously. "What are you doing?"
"I'm making the omelet," he replied. "I decided to make it with extra green bell peppers. Hope that's okay with you."
"I guess so," Wendy replied blindly. "Do we have the candy ready?"
"I'm going to wait until eight o'clock to start that," her father replied hysterically. "It only has to steam for sixty-four minutes."
"Okay," Wendy replied vacantly. "I'm gonna go to the bathroom."
"First, young lady, you need to have some breakfast. I've got some oyster on the half-shell in the skillet for you."
"Can't I just take a peek at the bathroom first?" she begged.
"It looks just like it always does," her father replied. "Remember, I'm depending on you to help with the decorating."
"Oh yeah," Wendy responded, as she sat down to her oyster on the half-shell. "Let's hang lots of jet black balloons and cover the fainting couch and the file cabinet with pea green crepe paper."
"That's fine," said her father immediately. "The paper plates and napkins have pictures of your favorite Tv star, Loreen Baca. Set the table with them, and make sure everyone has a turkey baster."
"Bam," Wendy responded. "I'm done, can I get started with the decorating now?"
"I think you inhaled your food," said Father with a sigh. "Go on, I'll be there in a few minutes."
