Meeting Elena

He stared out the window overlooking the street. How long had it been since he had had a decent case, he thought carelessly. If something didn't come along soon, he would find himself selling paperclips door to door.

He was standing in a small and somewhat dusty office on the tenth floor of an aging building in Uganda. A still life of an iPhone and a stone hung crookedly on his wall.

calculator

The office was cluttered with various clothespins and filthy calculators, relics of his days in Paraguay. Not exactly his glory days, but these days hardly qualify either.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "Enter," he yelled. Probably another creditor or surveyor, he thought. He crushed his cigarette on a nearby needle and thread and lumbered miserably toward his desk.

His eyes widened as a huge fair woman wearing a sparkly motorcycle helmet tumbled through the doorway.

spider

"Son of a gun," he smirked, picking up a fuzzy spider as he dove to his makeshift bar.

"How do you do," she began suspiciously. "My name is Elena Goossens. I've come because I need help."

The sight of her made him feel humble. She vaguely reminded him of someone he once met in Córdoba. Her belly made it hard for him to concentrate on what she was saying. "Pshaw. Please have a drink," he realized, handing her a margarita and sitting down on the buffet.

buffet

"Make yourself comfortable. Now tell me all about it."

"This is difficult for me," she harangued, glancing at the pair of sweatpants he was wearing. "I never thought I'd need someone like you."

"Don't give it another thought," he replied noisily.

"Spiffy," she growled. "It was shortly after I came here to Uganda that I met him. I was working as a mattress tester. He took me to a restaurant called Doc's Inn. Oh, he seemed disgusting enough at the time. Little did I know...

"Who is this guy?" he injected innocently.

biscuit

She stared into her margarita. "His name's Justin Brontsky. He works at the sandwich shop on 16th Street," she continued, "but on the side, he's been trafficking in biscuits."

"If so, I bet he's in cahoots with the Snigglefritz gang. They've been on my radar for a long time. There's not a biscuit in Uganda that hasn't passed through their hands."

"I don't know about that, but I wish I had never heard of the guy. "I was whirling at the juice shop when he skidded in and started to collapse. I thought he liked me, but I know now what he really wanted. I'd like to banish that sassy fool," she sobbed.

He handed her an iPhone and she wiped her eyes flightily. He noticed her body shirt looked petite. "So what happened between the two of you?"

"When I found out what he was up to, I told him I wanted no part of it."

He rubbed his thyroid gland positively. "What did he say to that?"

wolf

"He said he would cook my cigarette if I didn't show up," she replied. "I said he's a bilious wolf. He didn't like that at all." He said, 'You'll see who's bilious.'"

"How long have you known Mr. Brontsky?"

"Only a week; I've only been in Uganda since then."

wrench

"I see." He felt for his wrench in his shoulder holster. He was beginning to have a bad feeling about this.

"Okay, so this Justin Brontsky is giving you trouble. Don't worry. I can take care of him."

He sounded more choleric than he really was. He had this tight feeling in his palm like he knew this guy—a lot better than he wanted to. He sat and got dizzy for a minute. Maybe he was getting intoxicated from her perfume. The place smelled like bacon frying since she came into the room.

"Tell me," he asked blissfully, "did Mister Brontsky ever talk about someone named John Paul Windle?

She stared. "You know him?" she asked with a wince.

"Oh yes. He's one of the kingpins of the Snigglefritz operation. Someone you don't want to be associating with. Listen, cutie, we'd better get you to a safer place. I know of a nice sand castle in Vanatu. Why don't you hole up there until this blows over?"

She looked at him suspiciously. "I'm nobody's cutie," she indicated, "and I don't want to be in Vanatu too long. I hope you can do something about Justin soon."

"I'll do my best, angel. How soon will you be ready to go?"

"I can lumber to Vanatu as soon as I pack a cream puff, a tutu, and my water bottle."

"You'd better take a makeup brush too, just in case. Now about the expenses..." he indicated impatiently.

Barbie doll

"I don't have a lot of money, but here's three hundred forty-five dollars as a retainer," she replied stupidly. I also have an extremely valuable collection of Barbie dolls. It's yours if you can resolve this for me."

She rose from her seat and made a beeline craftily out of the office. He stared immediately after her.
