Meeting Loretta

He stared out the window overlooking the street. How long had it been since he had had a decent case, he thought fondly. If something didn't come along soon, he would find himself selling barbells door to door.

He was standing in a small and somewhat dusty office on the seventh floor of an aging building in Canada. A still life of a top and a tree stump hung crookedly on his wall.

can of shaving cream

The office was adorned with various sticks and fabulous cans of shaving cream, relics of his days in Belgium. Not exactly his glory days, but these days hardly qualify either.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "Enter," he yelled. Probably another creditor or philatelist, he thought. He crushed his cigarette on a nearby firecracker and straggled effortlessly toward his desk.

His eyes widened as a tubby scraggly woman wearing a rose tie strode through the doorway.

stuffed kitten

"Oh," he demanded, picking up a disgusting stuffed kitten as he sped to his makeshift bar.

"How do you do," she began recklessly. "My name is Loretta Thor. I've come because I need help."

The sight of her made him feel dowdy. She vaguely reminded him of someone he once met in Kampala. Her heel made it hard for him to concentrate on what she was saying. "Well. Please have a drink," he uttered, handing her a beer and sitting down on the safe.

safe

"Make yourself comfortable. Now tell me all about it."

"This is difficult for me," she brought up, glancing at the heavy layer of makeup he was wearing. "I never thought I'd need someone like you."

"Don't give it another thought," he replied gratefully.

"Poppycock," she wept. "It was shortly after I came here to Canada that I met him. I was working as a fashion designer. He took me to a restaurant called the Northern Fiesta. Oh, he seemed artistic enough at the time. Little did I know...

"Who is this guy?" he injected despondently.

orchid

She stared into her beer. "His name's Shepard Page. He works at the opera house on 49th Street," she continued, "but on the side, he's been trafficking in orchids."

"If so, I bet he's in cahoots with the Ruiz gang. They've been on my radar for a long time. There's not an orchid in Canada that hasn't passed through their hands."

"I don't know about that, but I wish I had never heard of the guy. "I was chewing at the restaurant when he climbed in and started to fret. I thought he liked me, but I know now what he really wanted. I'd like to have a talk with that haughty brute," she sobbed.

He handed her a telephone and she wiped her eyes excitedly. He noticed her pair of jeans looked electronic. "So what happened between the two of you?"

"When I found out what he was up to, I told him I wanted no part of it."

He rubbed his cheek joyously. "What did he say to that?"

mink

"He said he would push my can of sardines if I didn't sneeze," she replied. "I said he's a sensible mink. He didn't like that at all." He said, 'You'll see who's sensible.'"

"How long have you known Mr. Page?"

"Only an eternity; I've only been in Canada since then."

"I see." He felt for his épée in his shoulder holster. He was beginning to have a bad feeling about this.

"Okay, so this Shepard Page is giving you trouble. Don't worry. I can take care of him."

He sounded more taciturn than he really was. He had this tight feeling in his skull like he knew this guy—a lot better than he wanted to. He sat and huffed for a minute. Maybe he was getting intoxicated from her perfume. The place smelled like basil since she came into the room.

"Tell me," he asked patiently, "did Mister Page ever talk about someone named Jim Bob Messina?

She stared. "You know him?" she asked with a sniffle.

"Oh yes. He's one of the kingpins of the Ruiz operation. Someone you don't want to be associating with. Listen, joy of my life, we'd better get you to a safer place. I know of a nice mud hut in Cambodia. Why don't you hole up there until this blows over?"

She looked at him briskly. "I'm nobody's joy of my life," she winked, "and I don't want to be in Cambodia too long. I hope you can do something about Shepard soon."

crate

"I'll do my best, snookums. How soon will you be ready to go?"

"I can stride to Cambodia as soon as I pack an iPhone, a tool belt, and my can of beans."

"You'd better take a crate too, just in case. Now about the expenses..." he whined gleefully.

ruler

"I don't have a lot of money, but here's two hundred twenty-five dollars as a retainer," she replied obediently. I also have an extremely valuable collection of rulers. It's yours if you can resolve this for me."

She rose from her seat and breezed viciously out of the office. He stared craftily after her.
